    When we were growing up we would often pin the label ignorant on people acting unkindly toward us. At the time, it wasn't usually a very compassionate term. But as compassion evolves, the term takes on its original meaning of not really understanding the uniqueness of the other. Today we are more able to take unkind behavior less personally when we realize that if people really knew us, they would be kinder - they would be and act less ignorant. This is especially important in the workplace where many corporate cultures give people with power at least implicit if not explicit permission to treat people as devoid of uniqueness. (Rant over).
