    Realish

    David Sedaris remarks that his newest collection of his life story essays, "When You Are Engulfed in Flames",  is "realish", reflecting on the fact that many stories we call "non-fiction" have truths whether or not every fact contained is "true." Having fun with his critics about the fictitious dimensions of his recent autobiographical work, he says that "memoir is the last place you'd expect to find the truth."

    Sedaris richly deserves the same fate that's befallen James Frey. In time, I predict he'll become, if not as much a pariah among readers and the public generally, at least far less popular than he is now (his popularity has always escaped me, I admit). In the end, those who can't distinguish fiction from fact eventually hit some kind of wall. May his nose at least remain intact when that time comes.
